Where to place it?
1. Sun Exposure Your new bat house should be placed where it can get plenty of early morning sun with at least 6 to 10 hours of sunshine a day. Seeing that your bat house faces South to Southeast will ensure plenty of early morning sun. Where high temperatures in July average 80°F or less your bat house should receive at least 10 hours of sun; more is better. At least six hours of direct daily sun are recommended for all bat houses where daily high temperatures in July average less than 100°F.
2. Your Surrounding Area Most bat colonies like roosts within a 1/4 mile of a water source, preferably a river, lake, pond or creek. Areas where there is a mixture of varied agricultural use and natural vegetation make good habitat for bats. Bat houses are most likely to succeed in regions where bats are already attempting to live in buildings.
3. Mounting Bat houses should be mounted on buildings or poles. Houses mounted on trees are not as effective because bats are very wary of predators. Most wooden or brick buildings with proper sun exposure are good choices, and locations under the eaves or overhangs often work well. Bat houses should be mounted at least 12 to 25 feet above ground. Bat houses should not be put up near bright lights.
4. Predators Houses mounted on sides of buildings or on metal poles provide the best protection from predators. Metal predator guards may be helpful if you decide to mount your bat house on a wooden pole. Bat houses may be found more quickly by bats if located along forest or water edges where bats tend to fly; however, they should be placed at least 20 to 25 from the nearest tree branches, wires or other potential perches for aerial predators like owls and hawks.
5. When Bat houses can be installed at any time of the year, so the sooner you get it up the better. Keep in mind that bats migrate to caves during the winter months so bat houses are more likely to be used during their first summer if installed before the bats return in spring.
